Freedom of Speech

What Is It?

The freedom of speech as outlined in the first amendment means that the government can not restrict speech and the government can not regulate what people say by law. It also means the government can not punish a person for speaking out against the government, a right that we have that many other countries do not guarantee their citizens.

Why Is It Important?

This part of the First Amendment is extremely important because it allows for the citizens of a nation to discuss ideas freely, including ideas about politics and the government that might not be positive. Speech being protected by the government is important when talking about how a democratic republic like the United States changes and develops over time.

This of course brings up an important question: What is ‘Speech’?

Answer: It’s Complicated
